[NEWS RELEASE] TAMPA, FL. — January 27, 2008.  More than 6,000 lively cheerleaders and dancers will fill the Ford Amphitheatre with spirit and cheer at the 2008 Official Florida Cheer and Dance Championships to take place at the 104th annual Florida State Fair.

Traveling hundreds of miles from across the state, these cheerleaders and dancers will be competing for state titles in categories including all-star, school, recreational, pompom, jazz, hip-hop/funk and open-kick varieties.  Family and friends will want to encourage their favorite cheerleader or dancer as they compete in the Ford Amphitheatre.  The schedule of activities is as follows:

  • Sat., Feb. 9: Recreational School and College Cheer Teams and all Cheer Solo Championships
  • Sun., Feb. 10: All-Star Cheer and All-Star Dance Team Championships
  • Sat., Feb. 16: All other Dance Teams, Dance Solos and Group Championships

Participants, ranging in age from four to 18, will be competing in divisions ranging from basic to advanced levels as well as in a variety of cheer and dance styles.  College teams will also be on-hand to compete, showcasing years of cheer and dance experience through intricate choreography and high-flying cheer routines.

These young athletes will win more than bragging rights; the Florida State Fair Authority will award over $100,000 in cash and prizes to winning teams during the 2008 Championships.  The tops three squads in select cheer and dance divisions will win $1,500 for first place, $650 for second place and $350 for third place. In addition, the top three teams in each division will receive medals and the top five teams in each division receive trophies.

Experienced judges will be using a two-tier system to evaluate all the routines performed. The first tier consists of a five-judge panel of highly qualified industry professionals averaging scores out of a possible 300 points. The second tier consists of a separate 3-judge deductions/infractions panel responsible for taking penalty points for imperfect or illegal elements.  The deductions/infractions score is then subtracted from the total score.

For more information regarding these competitions, visit http://www.varsity.com/Index.asp?article=3356 or call Braxton Kinser at 1-800-462-8294, ext. 131.

All acts, concerts, scheduled times, exhibitors, prices, and other advertised events are subject to change and/or cancel without notice.  Fair gate admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages six to 11; and free for children five and younger.  NO RE-ENTRY is permitted without an admission ticket.  Gates open daily at 9 a.m. and parking is free during the 12 days of the Fair.

The Florida State Fairgrounds is located just seven miles east of downtown Tampa, with easy access via I-75, I-4, U.S. Highway 301, Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, and Orient Road.  For more information about the 2008 Florida State Fair, call toll-free (800) 345-FAIR or (813) 621-7821, visit http://www.floridastatefair.com/ or http://myspace.com/floridastatefair.
