[NEWS RELEASE] TAMPA, FL. — January 27, 2008. The 2008 Florida State Fair doesn’t bring visitors just new entertainment, it also brings new foods! Nowhere else but the Florida State Fair can you try more than one food on-a-stick or deep-fried delectables near impossible to make at home. This year’s new fair foods include deep-fried cookie dough, pizza on-a-stick, wet burritos, “walking” tacos, deep-fried fudge, deep-fried bratwurst, fried fruit on-a-stick, steamed clams from Cedar Key, and a variety of authentic Hispanic foods in LA PLAZA Hispanic Village. Deep-fried foods are one of the most sought after treats by Fair-goers year after year. One of this year’s deep-fried treats is already raising a lot of eyebrows on how it is made. Believe it or not, deep-fried cookie dough is not as hard to make as it may seem. This cookie creation is made by spreading cookie dough in between the dough of two elephant ears, deep-frying it funnel cake batter, and then topping it off with powdered sugar. The same people that brought Fair-goers deep-fried Pepsi last year will be introducing deep-fried cookie dough this year too! Another new treat found at the Fair this year takes one of America’s favorite foods to a whole new level: pizza on-a-stick. The pizza is made the usual way in an oven, but rolled-up and put on a stick after it is done baking. This creation is easy to eat while checking out all of the Fair’s attractions as compared to a regular slice of pizza. This next Fair food doesn’t actually walk around as the name may suggest, but it does make you wonder “what is a walking taco?” The “walking taco” can be compared to a taco in a bag. This creative snack consists of mixing your choice of taco ingredients (ground beef, beans, lettuce, shredded cheese, onions and tomatoes) into a bag of Fritos or Doritos, then eating it with a fork or spoon. The food ingredients of your liking are simply mixed right into the same Fritos or Doritos bag for easy eating while walking around. What will they think of next? In addition to all of the new Fair foods, an entire area of the Fair is dedicated to serving Hispanic cuisine. LA PLAZA Hispanic Village will showcase a bevy of foods known widely among the Spanish community including Colombian, Mexican, Puerto Rican and Cuban foods. One particular Colombian cuisine is an authentic meat dish sure to make any meat-lover’s mouth water: “Carne a la Llanera.” That means the meat is cooked on an open, rotating rotisserie-style pit and served on a skewer with savory flavoring – Mmmm! Watching it cook on the open pit is a show in itself sure to turn a few heads. Additional authentic Colombian dishes include: Authentic Mexican dishes include: Chile rellenos with cheese Tamales Tostadas Beef, chicken or pork burritos and soft tacos Quesadillas Ceviche with shrimp Sopapilla and churros for dessert Frozen and regular Horchata (cinnamon rice milk), tamarindo (natural water), agua de jamaica (hibiscus iced-tea) Jarritos sodas and Jumex juices
Authentic Puerto Rican foods include: Arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas) Pernil fritas y carnes fritas (roast pork and fried pork chunks) Peppered steak Pinchos (Spanish-style shish-ka-bobs) Pollo guisado (chicken stew) & much more!
LA PLAZA Hispanic Village will also have tasty Cuban sandwiches; handmade corn tortilla chips with salsa or jalapeno cheese sauce; ribbon fries with valenta salsa & lime; and Italian Ices for dessert in tropical flavors such as mango, passion fruit, coconut, and pina colada. Visitors can still find the traditional Fair foods such as elephant ears, cotton candy, corn dogs, Italian sausages, and kettle corn, just to name a few. Of course, visitors will always want to try something new!
